Aalam is an Urdu word of Arabic origin, which means the world, universe, and also condition, situation or circumstance.

The word is quite common in Hindi film songs, and often describes the latter, a condition, a situation.

The word has been used in songs like dil ka aalam from Aashiqui, and dard dilon ke from The Xpose. It's also there in the name of Aalam Aara (spelled as Alam Ara), India's first movie with sound. The meaning of aalam aara is the ornament of the world.
