Paimaana or Paimana is an Urdu word which means a scale.
Interestingly though, the word is heard a lot in Urdu ghazals. And there the word hardly has anything to do with a scale. Actually a secondary meaning of scale is a glass of wine [or liquor] as well.
Most probably the origination of this second usage comes from the fact that liquor is drunk to a scale, i.e. small peg, large peg and so on, which have specific quantities, and hence the usage of the word for glasses.
The word Paimaana is very commonly used in Hindi as well, but only for the scale and not the glass.
